Report on Jade Reunion 1976

REPORT ON JADE REUNION 28th  TO 31st  DEC 2011

  • 62 alumni and 30 spouses participated.  This was quite a good response considering depressed sentimentsdue to the on-going recession and also family reunions for many during the Christmas week.
  •  Noteworthy attendees were Raman family- Ravi had 4 generations including his mother (Late Prof S K Raman’s wife), his wife, his son & daughter-in-law, daughter & son-in-law and grand-daughter ;  a tremendous response  at a time when we were looking for minimum numbers for the event. Another noteworthy participation was by Marlene ( from Australia), only female Alum accompanied by IITian spouse Rustom Kanga:

  • The event kicked off with registration and well-attended dinner on 28th  Dec 11 with alums, especially those  who had not made it to the Silver Reunion 10 years ago,  trying hard to recognize one  otherCampus tour on 29th Dec was a big hit with visits to new hostels, new indoor stadium (built with major donation from Bharat Desai of Syntel), Victor Menezes Convention Centre(VMCC built with major donation from Victor Menezes), Nano lab, Geo-Centrifuge and ID.

Vmcc and all

  • 29th Dec Post lunch Presentations of Treelabs, PanIIT’s Nation Building Mission and IITBAA were well received.
  • After a joy-ride, the group travelled to Panoramic Resort at Karnala, in one luxury bus and about 20 odd cars.
  • Karaoke night drew enthusiastic participation of singing and dancing by alumni,  spouses and kids.
  • Just to remind the class of the old times, Dipak sprang a Surprise Quiz ( attached) on the unsuspecting gathering on the 30th morning. But true to their upbringing, the Class of 76 took up the challenge and with the help of tricks learned on the campus 35 -40 years ago, managed to scrape thru. This self-assessed photo quiz of “ THEN & NOW “ had some real gems like old photos of  Adil Karachiwala (Zainulbhai), Dilip Rao and a bearded Pramod Gujarathi which floored most of the guys. Bokya topped it with a score of 18 out of 19. We didn’t calculate the class average and standard deviation etc but we can surely say that Bokya got an “A” and since that was the only course on offer, he can safely claim now that he cracked a 10.00.
  • Alums were informed about existing projects of IIT and IITBAA for donations and the broad consensus was to support the following projects in any proportions at individual’s discretion: YFA-Young faculty awards ( i.e. joining bonus of Rs. 4 lakh to attract new faculty), FAP- Financial aid program ( loans to needy students at low  interest without security), HATS –Hostel alumni team stewardship (to help mess workers and add facilities in hostels), IITBAA-Decennial fund- to build a reserve for AA to expand its activities and  staff .
  • On-the-spot survey resulted in pledges of Rs 15  lakh per year from 40 alums present. Efforts will be made to              reach out the remaining 140 contactable alums and raise the target accordingly. Three alums (Deepak Samant, C P Ganatra & Kantilal Gandhi) have already handed over cheques worth Rs. 2 lakhs within a week. Alums in influential positions in Indian corporates will try to get matching donations from employers as is done by leading corporates in US.
  • The Spouses amused themselves with games like housie and songs while alums were busy debating IIT matters.
  • Professionals arranged party games in the evening with 4 teams named as Dogs, Cats, Crows and Goats. This was a lot of fun and required physical dexterity- sometimes beyond the capacity of the 55+ year old alums.  Deep strategy and game theory applications by Sammy, Potty, Mahendra Kapadia and Rajendra Nalawade made sure that the Dogs team came out winners by a few lengths. Every dog has its day and but that night belonged to the Dogs, leaving the Cats up the tree, Goats bleating and Crows eating crow.
  • The Talat Mahmood Nostalgia Nite was the most enjoyed and appreciated program of the event. Shrikant Pargaonkar and his team from Pune enthralled us and transported us back to 70’s.  Shrikant Pargaonkar who specializes in Talat Mehmood songs, did full justice to the demands of an appreciative audience of Talat-lovers. The accompanying artists Ms Kavita Jambhekar (vocal) and Anil Gode (accordion) further spiced up the event. All the artists soon got into the festive mood of the audience and gamely accepted various pharmaishes well beyond the scheduled time for the program.  An old song by Karishma Kini was an added attraction. While all were enjoying Talat’s gazals, some were busy guzzling their favourite poisons.  Nice weather and great ambience of  the pool-side venue made this the “high” point of the Reunion.  Bhatu, who had successfully handled the bar tending, was at his eloquent best at an extempore  vote of thanks !! Any other celebration on 31st  Dec 11 night would have been anti-climax after this program on 30th Dec.

  • Wedding anniversaries of the Christmas week were celebrated with cakes for Deshmukhs, Gunes and Kamaths.

anniversary

  • Nature lovers had an early morning date on 31st  Dec 11 with ‘real’  birds and bees at Karnala Bird Sanctuary, just 1.5 km from resort and in spite of the late night with Talat, there were 25-30 nature enthusiasts  who fortified by Dipak’s trademark khakras, made their way to Karnala. Unfortunately the birds were not all that keen to be watched by humans that morning and the party had to be content with the invigorating clean air and the lush foliage. Some lost their way (to be alone?) but all came back by safely to say good bye after brunch of parathas.

Trek

  • The choice of Karnala had been made keeping in mind the proximity to Mumbai - Pune and  was rewarded by a few additional alums who made it a point to visit the group albeit for a very short period. Thus Paand and Somnya made it for the 30th and stayed back to enjoy the mehfil. Raichur made it to the resort  on 31st brunch  and Uday Bhende dropped by as the group was busy saying their good-byes.
